Warnings

They always warned me that the most colorful insects
Were also the most venomous. Along with the
Deadliest of snakes and poisonous spiders. They screamed: stay away.
However, they never warned me about the one creature with the eyes
That hold the prettiest of stars, and a smile that cannot only break you,
But heal you in every way possible. You could never stay away from that creature,
Even if you tried.

They always say home is where the heart is,
But they never said it could be a pair of open arms.
Homes can be destroyed,
In a blazing fire or devastating tornado.
And you, you were my home that was destroyed.
The blazing fire between us left a burn and the tornado
Crippled everything in it’s path, including the inside.

They always told me to find someone who makes you
Feel the same way music does. Your heart racing, toes curling.
Yet they never told me that the sound of your voice would be my favorite song.
The way my name crossed your lips were the lyrics stuck in my head.
The sound of your laugh was the most beautiful melody.
But like every song out there,
It has to end at some point.

I stayed away from the colorful insects, the snakes, and the spiders.
I found myself a home where my heart belonged,
And I put my favorite song on repeat. It never occurred to me
That no matter how much I listened to all the warnings and the sayings,
I was never prepared for the one colorful insect I cannot stay away from.
The one home that cannot be fixed. That one song that makes my toes curl.
You. You were what they warned me about.
