Thoughts on You Leaving
For someone who is not there, you are sure brought up a lot,
You are all I ever seem to think about.
You have been far away for as long as I can remember,
You left our lives one cold day in December.
I cannot remember the reason, I cannot remember why,
Did we beg you to stay? Did we even try?
And why were you so sad,
were we really all that bad?
I cannot even remember you,
So I do not know what is true.
Is what they say so real?
And if so, I do not know what to feel.
It seems like I should miss you,
yet I do not even know you-
not really,
so it would seem silly.
Do I have the right to be angry
that you up and left our family?
But what scares me the most about you leaving,
Is I have nothing left for grieving.
I hear those words, and I pray it is not true,
when they say I am bound to end up just like you.

I was inspired to write this poem when I was a photo of my aunt holding me in her lap when I was very young. She left the family when I was still too little to remember her, due to conflict with the family. This upset me when I saw the picture, so I wanted to write about it.
