My heart pounds
thud thump, thud thump
like the beat of a horse’s gallop
My breathe is a rustle of the wind
making its way through the trees of a forest
on a warm and stormy day
My lungs are in a fiery desert
with the sun drying them out,
as if it thought they were prunes
My legs are a hummingbird's wings
carrying me swiftly over the earth that lies beneath me
My veins pump blood through me like a river
that is flowing bittersweet and tenderly
All of this is happening
while my imagination takes me far away
to somewhere happy so I can flee.

I was inspired to write this after our first cross country meet of the season.
