The Beginning of US
You watched me grow
And blossom into what’s now
A strong, independent, and confident body
You sat on my shoulder
Like an angel with devil’s horns
And were the markers on my mountain
You were my right-hand man
When no one was there
To see my face behind the mirror
You laughed at my jokes
When no one else did
And saw that happiness came from within
You pushed me past my limits
Into the depths of the sea
Just so I could receive
What was best for me
Understanding Self
Is so important
When you are your own best friend

My inspiration behind this poem was my grade 11 high school year. This year has been the epitome of finding myself and experiencing change that I’ve never felt before. It was the year of independence and learning how to balance my life while rocks were constantly being thrown at me. The older I got, the more I mature I got. I learned to think beyond what was put in front of me and dissect it so I could see the good and the bad. This year has been rough for everyone, but I’ve concluded that the only person who will bring me up when I am sinking is myself.
