On the Brink of Summer

the sun is hot but
the air is cool
children play outside,
neglecting their schoolwork
for a short burst of sunshine.
the ice cream truck rumbles down the road
singing the anthem of summer
we crowd around it
licking ice cream off our fingers,
it melts away with the last breath of spring.
