Pompeii Train
The train had a
Yellow door
I didn’t know
What it opened
Or held shut
But when I
Boarded the train
I knew one thing:
The people
Surrounding me
Terrified me
People I didn’t know
People I didn’t want to know
So I kept my eyes
Peeled on that
Yellow door
Hoping
Praying
That if I did
The people
Surrounding me
Couldn’t
Wouldn’t
See
The American
Stained fear
In my eyes

I wrote this poem on my spring break trip to Rome, Italy. My family and I dedicated the trip to sightseeing and booked a train ticket to Pompeii. During the train ride, I found myself overwhelmed by the different atmosphere and created an interesting writing opportunity for myself.
