Where I'm From
I am from poetry,
from forts in the woods and BB guns,
I am from Barbie and G.I. Joe.
I am from sweet Hershey’s and sour Skittles,
the few remaining Reeses,
that are always gone
within a day.
I’m from the loud Led Zeppelin and The Doors,
from the beautiful Farrah Fawcett and Leif Garrett.
I’m from ‘What’s up?’
and ‘What a fox!’
from the MAD magazine compilations that now feel
worn down from all the handling.
I am from Judy Blume books
that have now
been passed down to me.
I’m from Legos and Slip n’ Slide,
from ballet and tap dance.
From little league baseball
and Red Rover
in the summer heat.
My parents wanted to be lawyers,
and I am from those intense personalities.
I am from the debates and arguments.
Outsmarting people
since day one.
