FRIENDS (WITH BENEFITS)

What am I to you? he asks
I stop slightly taken aback
Carefully deciding what I should say

I could have chosen to say
You are the passionate kisses under our covers
The rap songs I subconsciously hum on the bus to school
The giggles in the shower that halt quickly at the sound of creaking floorboards
The uncontrollable smiles when I see you round the corner of Newman hallway
The sizzling of a chicken dinner you once made me
The cuddles on my couch – and your couch
The distinct smell of your sweatshirts
The late night texts that make my heart flutter and
The youthful flirtatiousness of your personality.

But instead I simply replied:
You are my friends with benefits.
