Daddy Daughter Dance
You are the father too selfish to stay around
The villain begging for a forgiveness simply to pity himself
You are the bottle of Grey Goose filled of Daddy Daughter-Dances you never made it to
You are the fly your daughter cries about
Because she's scared the damn bug will leave her too
However you are not the “thank you” when adults say she is just as you
Nor the lineage I’ve been dying to know
Or the shoes I stand on when I’m too small to swing dance with you
And you are certainly not the fairytale mom made to justify your point of view
There is just no way that that could ever be you
It is possible you are king of some foreign country *cough cough Natzi Germany
Maybe even an empty seat at a ballet recital
But you are not even close
To the cards on my birthday signed “with love, dad”
And a quick look in the mirror will show
You are not the boyfriend my father scares at the door
Nor the one who apologizes for what I thought was love but just something for you to ignore
It might interest you to know
speaking of the plentiful imagery of the world
That I am the child who never stopped screaming at daycare when her father dropped her off
I also happen to be the texts on your phone when I still can’t understand we have broken up
Even the kicks you get in the hallway when my friends here the way you broke me
And the smile I’ll allow to cross my face when remember the way you told me we were Euphoric
I am also the girl you write crappy poetry about
And the one who swears the first boy she kisses is the one she ought to marry
But don’t worry I am not the father too selfish to stay
You are still the father too selfish to stay
You will always be the father too selfish to stay
And not to mention the villain begging for a forgiveness simply to pity himself-- and somehow--the bottle of Grey Goose filled of Daddy Daughter-Dances you never made it to

This piece is a metaphor for an unhealthy relationship and how ending them feels the same as if having an absent parent. With close examination, it can be discovered that the poem is not directed to the narrirators father, but rather a not-so good lover.
