I am from a supporting, sentimental, and stunning family,
a family people wish for…
a family I am grateful for.

I am from four brothers and no sisters,
struggling to get along with girls,
the judgment of my comfort around boys.

I am from shoes falling out of bags and bleeding feet.
Striving to do my best...
the rush of adrenaline, feeling like a different person when I step out onto the stage.

I am from a childhood of missing my dad.
Waiting in agony for him to return from China,
with bracelets, dolls, and pictures in hand.

I am from cramped car rides cross country,
flavorful, homemade spaghetti...
and tear-stained t-shirts when leaving.

I am from a childhood of ending the nights in…
“Don’t let the bedbugs bite your fanny off!”...
and mornings of cereal in the family room watching The Sweet Life of Zack and Cody.

I am from cluttered cabinets, corners full of toys, and crying babies.
Patiently waiting for my mom to take care of other children…
before her own.

I am from a broken nose to stitches on my face,
trying to keep up with the boys…
while wishing for a sister.

I am from roasts with mashed potatoes, green beans, and warm rolls.
The family gathered around the table...
for a home cooked meal.

I am from parents people dream about,
a dad who is funny, forgiving, and fearless—with the characteristics I want in a husband…
and a mom who shows me how to be selfless.

I am from a happy marriage,
one to look up to,
and constant I love yous.

I am from a supporting, sentimental, and stunning family,
a family people wish for…
a family I am grateful for.
