You can't squeeze blood from a turnip.

An eerie dirge rings through the ocean’s waves,
coating the seas in a blanket of vibrations.
The whale’s song that no other can comprehend –
a tune pierces across miles of a deep azure.

She continues her opera, humming high and humming low,
on a stage of sand accented with undulating
curtains of blue.
The whale drones on, measure after measure
and the ocean’s creatures tap their fins
in uproarious applause.
Flitting her tail in a 1-2-3 waltz, her heart,
as big as a bus keeping the tempo steady.
Her final note crescendos; she takes a humble bow
and retires to the dark sea floor to sing in the morning once more.
