On a sunny February morning

in ballroom at the Palace Hotel,

an 18-year-old stands nearby,

smiling politely but confidently

in his well-tailored suit.

His name is Kai Kloepfer and he’s from Colorado.

To Aurora Holmes he’s almost invisible.

Kloepfer has spent the past four years

at Boulder’s Fairview High School waiting for his chance.

Worse case scenario,

Aurora’s answer would be no.

He returns later stone-faced.

“Well, that was horrible,” he whispers.
