What We Deserve
We accept the love we think we deserve.
So we break.
And we cry.
And we wonder why we aren’t good enough.
We sit at the ends of our bed.
While the river of tears stream down our faces.
And we wonder why our hearts aches.
We accept the love we think we deserve.
So we fall.
We crash.
We lose ourselves.
Because our happiness doesn’t matter anymore,
Because we fight to make them smile more than we fight to stay happy,
We watch as his eyes love someone else while his words caress her.
We wait for the phone calls that never come.
We say “I love you” first just to hear it in return.
We talk about how we hate ourselves just so he can make us feel pretty.
We stay, even though we have all the right reasons to leave.
And that’s because we accept the love we think we deserve.
We think we deserve an I love you once a week,
We think we deserve those phone calls that only come when asked.
We think we deserve the fake presents,
To cover up the fact that his eyes are in love with the girl next to us.
But we deserve better.
So we cry and argue,
Hoping that he can become better,
Hoping that his big boyish eyes will fall madly in love with us,
Until hope is not enough and we let go.
Because we don’t need the love we think we deserve.
We should no longer accept it,
We should no longer fight for it.
So we stop.
And we make it known that the love we think we deserve is not what we need.
We make it known that we are worth fighting for.
The love we deserve will call us at random times just to hear our voice.
The love we deserve will make sure we know we are beautiful every second of the day.
He will treat us with gifts that we didn’t want nor ask for, but that we needed.
And not to cover up that his eyes are stuck on the girl next to us.
Because the love that we deserve will only have eyes for us.
We accept the love we think we deserve.
Until we find the love that deserves us.
