Turkey Tradition
Four AM rise and shine
Sleepy’s in your baggy eyes
You meet in the cramped kitchen
Slurp some warm coffee with dad
Want some coffee with that sugar?
He always asks
You do this every year
Look forward to it every time
You take out the stuffing
You prepped and nibbled the night before
Your secret recipe only you two share
Time to stuff the turkey
Cold and messy
He takes over, like always
In the oven by five AM
The heat from the oven
Warming the festive house
Adding to the coziness
You are the only two awake
Will be for a while
Time to sneak the snacks
The cheese and crackers
Bacon wrapped hot dogs
Homemade chex mix
He won’t tell mom

This piece is inspired by the tradition my dad and I have every year on Thanksgiving.
