When We Were Young
WE DID EVERYTHING TOGETHER
MY BROTHER, SISTER, AND ME.
WE PLAYED AS
HARRY, RON, AND HERMIONE,
SHOUTING ACROSS THE OCEAN IN
ATTEMPTED BRITISH ACCENTS AND
USING PRETEND HEDWIG
TO SEND SECRET NOTES.
WE MADE MAPS
AND PLAYED IN STRIPS OF TALL,
THICK, GREEN BAMBOO THAT
SEPARATED NEIGHBORS.
THEN THEY GREW UP AND HAD NO TIME ANYMORE.
I SPLASHED IN THE OCEAN
WITH NO ONE TO SAY MY
ACCENT WAS BAD.
I SLID THROUGH THAT THICK
BAMBOO ALL BY MYSELF.
I SPENT MY TIME
WANTING TO GROW UP WITH THEM.
BUT NOW I AM GROWN UP.
HE HAS DEPARTED FOR
HIS NEW FOUR YEAR HOME.
SHE IS STILL WITH ME, YET
NOW NEITHER SHE NOR I HAVE THE TIME.
