Like a Father

I never knew my real father
I only ever knew you.
But even though we looked different
I was never bothered by it.
You taught me everything I ever knew
You taught me obedience,
when to sit down and shut up.
You taught me fun
I loved the days we spent just playing catch outside.
You taught me how to show other people
all the skills you taught me.
You couldn’t always spend time with me,
you had important things you needed to do
that’s fine,
I understand you can’t always be around,
I can wait until you have time.
And even though we both knew I was not really your son
we have a connection,
a bond.
And I see how much you hold back the tears for me,
trying to hide how much you will miss me,
don’t cry,
I will always be in your heart.
And so as we part for now,
remember I will be happy where I am
See you soon.
