The Theater
The star of the play is a lonely girl,
And though her face holds makeup meant to transform,
Her disguise is weak.
When the curtain falls,
And all that is left is the echo of applause,
Her mask crumbles.
Tears leave behind trails of mascara,
And her foundation is smeared
As she wipes away what is left of the past.
Months of work left her with nothing
But empty praise and false hope.
Darkness overtakes the room,
And she is left to wonder
What might have happened if she had worked harder.
If she had composed herself for just a moment longer.
If she had been stronger.
She is weak.
She is trying.
She has failed.

This poem is a revision of one I wrote immediately after the final performance in a play I was in. At the time, I was upset that a budding romance with a boy I liked had come to nothing, and was fully prepared to be an angsty emo teen about the whole situation.
