A Fish Tale

Inside my head there is a beautiful book,

a masterpiece and a fish's hook,

And my thoughts when they have a moment to spare

Tug on that hook if they dare,

I'll pull the thought onto the shore

Or lose it at last and ponder evermore.

From time to time the Great Thought will bite

and keep me awake half the night;

It dwells so deep within my mind

that I can never recall where it hides.

Pages rich with answers sweet

to questions that I often meet,

And each page stronger than the last,

This thought evades my mind's firm grasp.

But now and again I catch a glimpse:

A word, a line, or just a hint.

Who knows how big the Great Thought is!

In the world just a minow, in my mind a great fish.

Perhaps one day I'll pull it ashore

And see it in print on some shelf in some store,

But until then it stays in the depths of my mind

To which the world is surely blind.

Inside my head there is a beautiful book,

a masterpiece and a fish's hook.
