Departure, Take 1

I’d like to say goodbye to you, but I don’t know how
I could start it “Dear-”
Dear who? Your name is not sufficient to describe everything I’m writing to
I want to say goodbye to this place
But isn’t the place the people?
Or the people the place?
And the place the events which will soon be demoted to memory
And I along with them
I’d like to say goodbye to your hands
before they wave goodbye to me
Skim the pad of my thumb across the hollow of your palm
And watch your fingers react like puppet strings
This goodbye, like all goodbyes, should not become chaotic
But you know I don’t have good luck
I am a mess
I was your mess
I’m not your mess anymore
