Nobody ever knew of our nods
The secret winks and smiles
Only for each other’s eyes
Which spoke more than any words we had

Nobody registered the brushes
The rush of heat when his fingertips
Concealed under creamy white gloves
Ghosted across my armor

Nobody wondered why my prince,
Usually swamped with studies and state of affairs,
Always attended the matches
Where his servant and shield
Would best his fellow sirs in feats of strength

Nobody recognized why,
Despite my skill and status,
I never lanced for any ladies of the land

Nobody deduced my prince’s disappearance
During every dance
Having dodged the advances of every duchess and damsel,
Only to be “found” by me

Nobody could find the heavy heartedness
Hidden in my prince’s humble smile
At the auspicious announcement of his engagement
To the fair daughter of the king’s ally

Nobody noted the knot in my throat
As my perfect prince stepped down the aisle
Arm in arm with his beautiful bride
Averting his eyes from mine

Nobody questioned my face,
Like a frigid sculpture
Framed by the few falling tears I failed to hide

Nobody ever saw
And now nobody ever will
