Favorite Quote:
Have an attitude of gratitude.

You sip wine

as if it were water;

beer is your typical, midday drink.

How I would love

to come into your house

and pour it all down the sink.

It's no wonder

we can't have adult conversations

and you can't deal with the past.

With this many toxins

flowing to your heart and brain,

your emotional connections with others will never last.

And then,

you let your hands slip

from the bottle to the wheel.

You never thought

about how your actions

would make those around you feel.

Thankfully,

no one really got hurt,

but you still spent some time in jail.

Now we're left

to pick up the pieces

of your momentary judgment fail.

I don't know

what to do with you now;

your apologies seem like lies.

And I don't know

if my heart can take

looking into your glazed-over eyes.

I really wish

you all the best;

I hope you get the help you need.

But as for

our relationship...

I'm going to have to secede.

The author's comments:

As president of Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) at my school, I have been aware for many years of the dangerous and life-changing effects that alcohol and driving under the influence come with. Yet, these effects never actually hit me until I found out someone I knew and loved was involved with the abuse of alcohol. I cannot explain how heartbreaking it was when I realized that the behaviors and warning signs had been in front of me for years and I didn't even know.

I hope this poem leads people to think twice before picking up a bottle and really drives home how dangerous drinking and driving can be. Luckily, nothing fatal happened to my friend, but something could have...someone could have been killed.

So, please, think before you act and ESPECIALLY before you get behind the wheel.
