After-effect
waking up to darkness
images and sounds leap from
different sides of my head
my heart is thundering like marching drums
my fingers are trembling as I search blindly
for the monsters under my bed
tears kiss my lips
my body curls in, leaving room for nothing
but the fear that slips through the cracks
my nightmares are pulling me in
and I am on the brink of surrendering
but I don’t
i look up to my mother, standing in my doorway
ready to comfort, ready to tell me it’s okay
