Looming splintered masts
are silhouetted by the receding daylight -
rocking lazily with the rhythmic groove of the ocean.

Looking out
I see deep purple hues watercoloring
the liquid gold sun setting on the horizon.

I feel the cool salty breeze
caress my sunburnt skin --
soothing the sweltering day spent above deck.

Maybe I will find treasure on this journey,
I think to myself as I turn my gaze eastward.
Towards the first dusting of stars --

like the freckles painted
on the face of the pretty girl in town.
I will bring back jewels especially for her.

To win her heart, to impress her.
And to finally,
turn her eyes to notice me.

Sawyer! Mom yells
Come downstairs,
dinner is getting cold!

I gently replace the delicate
figurine on the windowsill --
taking one more longing look at the darkening sky

Just waiting for me to explore.
