The Visitor
I lie down peacefully at night,
leaving my bedroom door slightly ajar,
just enough for a thin beam of light
to shine in.
Ibegin to doze into a different state,
only to be awoken by a subtle scratch
coming from the otherside of my wooden door
followed by the hinges creaking
as it slowly swings open.
I see a figure
lumbering toward my bed side.
I can feel something else
nuzzled into the covers with me.
My legs are basically paralyzed,
I look down to see a black shadow
sprawled around my legs.
I reach down and gently rub
the black shadow behind the ear
and fall back asleep
ever so peacefully.

Some nights while I'm almost asleep my dogs will comeinto my room and hop into bed with me. They always lay near my feet, so I can't move them. I started out eerie and left it up to the imagination what the balck shadow could be, then gave hints that it was only a dog.
