She wakes up in May, after a month of rain.
She helps the roses to grow, urging them to bud and bloom.
She weaves their thorn-ridden stems up like the trees,
And encourages the sunflowers to touch the sky.
She introduces the trees to the heavens
And smiles when they kiss.

In Summer, she burns with joy
As she watches her children thrive around her.
She watches her trees have their own
And the flowers
  And the plants.
She finds new creatures, and grows the clover up
And leads the striped bees to them.
She dances with the fireflies at night
And runs on the water with their dragonfly kin in the morn.

She watches with horror in Fall as
Humans and animals harvest and eat her children’s children.
She cries, and her tears fall to the earth
If only to flood the rivers in her devastation.
She trembles in anger and the earth quakes in fear.

She finally cools down, but her tears still run.
The birds fly south as she isolates herself,
Turning the world into a desolate place.
She turns the water to ice
And the herd animals migrate, following the birds
And the solitary animals burrow deep
   To avoid her wrath.

And when they think it safe, the birds return.
She finds joy in them, and cries with happiness
And again with sadness as she remembers her lost grandchildren,
But she smiles when she sees that some of them have survived.

And Nature repeats herself
Always finding joy and sadness.
