I came upon a lonely wood,
In which no traveler has ever stood,
And in which to find there is no good;
Turn back, it whispered, and I knew I should.
Yet, onward I went with unquenched fear,
For there was not one sound that I could hear,
Strange, I thought, for a wood at this time of year,
To not even rustle gently with grazing deer.
With every step, my hands would shake,
For there was no courage for me to fake,
My heart pounded so hard, I feared it would break,
But I swallowed my fear and swore not to forsake.
The deeper I ventured the darker it grew,
If it were night or day, I had not a clue,
I felt as though my mind had gone askew,
Though if it did abandon me, I never knew.
Why, you may wonder, did I enter this wood?
Well, I’d try to explain, but I don’t think I could,
For within that darkness there was no good,
Still, I went to look anyway-
I simply knew that I should.
