Outside I see the city that never sleeps or pauses to catch a breath
A concrete jungle
A smoke clogged sky
People bustling from place to place
Always in a rush
Only one thing remains constant in this ever changing place
A small yellow flower that pokes from a crack in the dirty sidewalk
Surrounded by dirt, gum, and last night’s cigarettes
It continues to thrive in the midst of chaos
A glimmer of hope in an otherwise grim slum
It continues to grow everyday despite the challenges it faces
It springs back to attention after being stomped on
In stands tall despite the beating sun
And shines like a beacon through the winter snow
I see this so clearly from my third floor window

I was inspired to write this after I read an article about a young woman who worked in factory all day in terrible conditions for hardley any money.  She said she does it to support her family and continues to see hope for her family's future despite the overwhelming amount of negative things in her life.
