Mother Winter
the barren land
dull and brown
is now
covered in a gown
of white
she has come to embrace us
in her chilly arms
her lullaby soothes the living beings below her
and she tucks them in their burrows and beds
for a long winters sleep.
her love can be gentle
but she can be just as cruel
her anger can rage at the most
unexpected of times
her howls of anguish can be heard for eons
her breath bone-chillingly numb
the creatures cower in fear
of her icy stare
until
her frozen heart is struck
by the warmth
of sister Spring
and our cold mother
melts away
