Quick look in the mirror
Pink hair and nonprescription glasses
Over brown eyes, atop a snubby nose
80s pink striped vintage dress and bulbous purple boots
Bangles up one arm, pink sugar tattoos over the other
Hurry up or you’ll be late for school!
Run to the bus stop, pretending to be
A rock star while tripping over cracks in the sidewalk
Still singing as she climbs into the bus
Funny stares follow her small back
“Who is this wild girl?” Whispers follow her like ghosts
Behind her, but she ignores them
She takes a seat alone and takes out a thick book
Pretending to read a codex as she hums
When she lifts her head she sees
Wicked imps smiling at her, the target
She frowns, holding on to a small trinket box
That is actually a piece of scrap paper
Warding off the scattered imps
Off the bus and into school, at least she isn’t breaking the dress code
Walking to newly assigned lockers, she trips over a superfluous shoe
Falling to the floor, she sees the devilish grins again
A battle angel, she picks up a textbook
And swings the sword at an imp, sending them away
Like ash to get orders from the boss
She picks up her spellbooks and opens her treasure chest
Throwing her survival supplies in, taking out the important things
For the next adventure
She returns to class, the imps still absent
Her flouncy skirt gets snickers from girly fairies
Gossiping about her lack of style
Ignoring them, she intently listens to the instructor
Who is explaining how to use shields effectively
Against paper arrows and pastry projectiles
Time ticks until a bird lets out a strangled cry
Class ends and survival tests begin
Bringing her bookbag with the heavy codex
She skips to lunch riding a pink zebra skirt
Right after she gets to lunch, the imps come back
As she setas, one aims an apple bomb at her
He is hesitating too long, the girl thinks
And the cannon fires at her, the the bomb
Fails to hurt her as it is deactivated by a shield
Nobody else dares to mess with the Pink Zebra
And she quickly finishes to get back to class
After class is over, Pink Zebra leaves the room with newfound knowledge
Totally ready for the upcoming storm
Packing her bags, she rushes outside, meeting a downpour of rain
Using her loyal shield as an umbrella, she runs to the bus
Unaware of yet another long imp leg stuck out to trip her
So she falls, crashing on hard pavement
Imp glides away in victory as a rescuer nears
The nice kid that wore baggy clothes, the long cape
Helps the struck down zebra up and walks her to the bus
Not a word uttered, the girl thanks him and hurries up the tall steps
Going home with a butterfly in her heart, intending to practice new moves
Can be the greatest thing ever in a school
Where bullies are imps and prissy girls are fairies
Where teachers are all magic professors
Where books are swords and bags are shields
Where Pink Zebra is the best of them all because she has the most
Rainbows in her brain than the rest of the crowd

The author's comments:

At first I wrote this piece for a school competition, but I decided I should submit it here! It is about the imagination of the main character, Pink Zebra.
