The Robin
I watched a robin die once
Its leg looked broken,
And when it beat its wings
it spun in a circle like a helicopter rotor,
tried to fly for two minutes,
Flipped around on its side
In a desperate attempt
For flight
an action which had once been easy
The robin's beady eyes pleaded with me
And I stared as it crawled its way to a car tire
lay back against the rubber
Panting
The red belly heaving
And I stood still,
Five feet from my front door.
And I stood still.
