My quote from Plato
Was too long to fit in the yearbook.

There I was,
Nested in the corner of the page,
My bright, bubbly portrait with
The headband I wore every day.
A baby picture,
As was tradition for graduating fifth graders,
Formatted in a neat circle to my left.
The quote,
Situated below the curly hair
And ruffly white shirt in
Soft focus,
Forgot to include Plato’s name.

The corner,
Still there but
The headband,
Still searching to
The baby picture,
The garden background,
The sun that danced off my hair,
The four-tooth overbite,
My eyes that squinted at the flash,
The “Shift your head to the left,
A little bit more,
Bring your chin up, up, up
THERE,
now give me a BIG smile.”

I wore the ruffly white shirt
Because I realized that morning
That the photographer
Would crop off
My giant red shirt
That said
“Rest in peace Pluto.”

Here is a short poem I wrote one day, when I felt as if I had lost connection with who I was when I was younger through the stress and busy times of junior year.
