The little dog in the corner
Slept by herself
Fur matted with fleas
But her face full of hope

Her heart full of worms
Could love just the same
Barely three years old
And sentenced to the rope

People passed by her
They chose other dogs
Younger ones
Healthy ones
But not her

Her paws full of thorns
And her eyes full of dread
Resigned to her fate
Resigned to her death

Then a man came in
With a leash in his hand
A collar round her skinny neck
A cure for her disease

Her eyes, without words
Conveyed every emotion
Free as a bird
Happy as anything could possibly be

A heart full of worms
Behind fur covered ribs
A heart plagued by parasites
Can fill just the same
