I am from the blue house atop the hill.
Seventeen years it’s been.
From that winding path, now outgrown--
Finding its way to the Mill Pond.

I am from Mavericks, Mustangs, and “Merton is the best!”
Nine years molded.
From “all out, all the time” and “low man wins”--
WIAA state champs, we triumphed our final year.

I am from grade school crushes to high school romance.
Years ago, most forgotten.
From best friends doing drugs and making mistakes.
Most of whom turned to the worst.

I am from B+, not smart enough.
The year with Mr. Springer ending with deep sighs and soggy eyes.
From growing up and saying goodbye--
to friends, teachers, and playing games.

If I roamed those empty halls,
I would see a school, like the rest.
Not the same, not at best.
The teachers changed, as have the times.

Now if you took the Mill Pond Way,
You’d find the blue shaded house with a car in the drive.
The custard shoppe is closed, those friends are gone.
As are the times, it’s time to move on.
