"Everyone is an ocean inside. Every individual walking the street. Everyone is a universe of thoughts, and insights, and feelings. But every person is crippled in his or her own way by our inability to truly present ourselves to the world". -Hosseini

Your screams still echo in my mind
Waves of high amplitude memories oscillating through my nerves
    A meteor shower.
Their streaks make a wall
Whether to catch my flickering eyelids,
Or to rebound any attempts at amendment,
   I’m not sure.
But I am sure

that every time your somber gaze locks on mine,
Like you can’t be sure if you’re alive
Or just an autumn leaf with a thin layer of kaleidoscope,
My bones feel like a red giant contracting under the weight of your gravity.
I only peek at you through the slots of my fingers
Because if I stare directly into your skin
My eyes might burn from the fluorescence of your pain
A daughter should never have to see her mother cry.
And I’ve always wanted to know:
How is it that most people will live their entire lives
Ignorant of the way your tears leaked out
Like a secret that never should’ve been told?
I guess the scientists got it wrong.
Some things can escape a black hole.
