You would tuck me in

And with your hushed whispers, spin again

The tales of princesses and lions

Of faraway lands, somewhere near the Orion

My eyelids would drop, laden with sleep

Away you would try to creep

Forgetting, I had interlocked our hands sometime during the night

You would come close, and once more, hug me tight

When the age of princesses had come to an end

You had stories of astronauts and surgeons penned

You gave me your love of strawberry ice cream

You taught me to how to dream

When I began to hate pink, you did too

When I would cry, your eyes would water too

When I would dance around the kitchen, you would too

Never one without the other, it will always be us two

Even when we would fight

Even in our spite

You would forgive me

And I you, so we could forget it all and just agree

And in these moments, I knew

You would always be there for me, sticking close like glue

But this time around

I’ll be there for you; I will tend to your wounds

Whenever you feel down

I’ll be there to pick you up, off the ground

And turn your frown

Upside down

When lamps need to be fixed

Or paintings need to be affixed

When you need a taste-tester

I’ll be there for you to pester

Because this time around

I’ll take you to Cape Town

I’ll be aplomb

This time around, I’ll be the mom
