Only a Matter of Time
A room
Four walls
Bare, white
Like a square cut from fabric of barren tundra.
Only
Soundless
And still
Yet so filled with something
Something far beyond reach of the human eye.
Outside
A demon
Seeks to invade
To pervade the room
With its monstrous presence.
Could that
Something
Possibly take action?
How could it allow
Such a threat to advance?
Helpless
No windows to anticipate the threat
Nor intelligence to comprehend
The existence of the threat
Only
Itself
In a manifestation so pure
As pure as the white of the walls guarding it.
A pureness so pure
That nothing could be purer
But no matter.
Only
A matter of time
Before the demon taints the room
With apple-red blood.
Only
A matter of time
Before the something becomes
But a memory
A particle of sand carried away by the wind
The last trace of a time now so long past.
Only
A matter of time
Before—
A room
Four walls
Bright, red
Like the skin of an apple harvested in fall.
Diamonds
Broken
Scattered on the floor
A new diamond from the store
Sitting on the desk by the door.
Outside
A beach
Basks in the glow
Of the sunset
Its sunrays tinting the sand red.
Subtle shades of pink
Orange, yellow, and violet
So beautiful it could
Make a grown man cry.
Would that
Something
See the sunset, and cry?
Would it cry as it did
When the demon did arrive?
No matter.
Only
A matter of time
Before the demon taints the lives
Of all those alive.
