Here to Live

The abyss in my chest
Stirs with frantic haste.
It sings hollow notes
As every turn takes something else.

Stuck in those depths, in everything I’m not
Is that withering piece of who I truly am.
It clings and pulls,
Because hope just won’t let it rest

I can feel its icy hand,
With an unforgiving grip.
Call it felicity or call it dread,
It’s tearing me apart all the same.

Interminable tombs
Know neither mercy nor end
And so mine won’t let out
That which remains.

The grave in my heart
Holds the happiness that hasn’t left me yet.
I know because it hurts,
More than sorrow ever could

Joy gropes at everything to escape,
But sinks deeper into obscurity instead.
It latches on to my organs, my skin, and my dreams,
Until there will be nothing left of me.

That twisted angel,
Aching to leave pain’s confinement
Only buries herself deeper,
And threatens to take me with her.

The abyss in my heart
Churns and smothers joy…
But the pounding in my heart,
It reminds me I’m still here.

Here to stay,
Here to live,
And to grow,
And to laugh.

So happiness,
Take it all if you wish.

This is a reference to the intangible, but painful all the same, struggle between happiness and that which entraps it: time, hate, etc.
