he hides light in liquor bottles
bleeds purple regret and splits himself
with shattered glass,
then pieces together the broken parts that will
never be whole – only merely presentable
for stained glass murals don’t hide
the cracked lines and sharp edges
but there is a certain art, he says,
in coloring transparency.
glowing, illuminating hues yet however
many layers he paints,
there will never be enough to uncrack
the fragments;
he breaks
