To pay their keep.
To earn their life.
To keep their sanity.

They are picking cotton.
To pay for their debt.
To earn their freedom.
To keep their family.

They are quiet.
To pay for their race.
To earn a coin.
To keep a roof.

As they pick cotton
they mumble under their breath
words of unutterable language.
Claiming their desire to live.

Their heart is beating
they are living.
Picking white against their black,
they are living.
