Ruby my dearest,
Welcome to our school,
it will not be easy,
but you will prevail.
Learn to block,
block out your history,
block out your fears,
block out others.
People don’t want you here,
but I do and
your family does.
The material may be new
but I will work with you.
To allow you to understand your strength,
to believe that you are breaking down barriers of segregation,
to succeed and make it into the history books.
I will be here for you,
to be your friend,
your listener.
