The drive up was beautiful
Morning sun just waking
The truck stops, it’s game on
So excited, hardly able to suit up
Dropping arrows as I load the holder
Spray myself down and it’s time to go

First I must get a view on the cliff
Struggling over the rocks, I see them
The herd, at least ten shooters
I’m excited, although the work is just starting
The herd four miles away in the valley
Getting there undetected will be difficult

I start the hike down
Trudging through creeks, and jumping over rocks
Dead tired I’m carrying 60 lbs.
The closer we get
The more difficult it becomes
I must be quiet as a mouse
Yet quick like a cobra at the same time
The adrenaline keeps me going

We stop to check the herd
They’re on the move
We must hurry
Catch them at the end of the valley
Swiftly moving around trees and rocks
I finally reached them
I grab the bow and line up on a 8x8
Crack!!! the sound I once loved as a baseball player
Is now my enemy
As I pulled back I stepped on a branch

Just like that a 750 lbs trophy is gone
All that work climbing
Walking through creeks
Hurtling rocks
All for nothing
I’m furious
I know it’s all part of the sport
Next time
