The Wise Ocean
The day is summer, bright burning hot
Waves glisten under the warm rays
Tanned beach-goers smile away
Colorful rides roar at the boardwalk
Oh, Santa Cruz, a park more than else.
But I come only for its beast
Her roar is the loudest
Embracing my tired limbs and soul
Grounding my spirit to Earth
Her icy water enlivens me
Her silken sand hugs my toes
Seamless, I am one with her
She welcomes me further.
Swimming past noise and waves
I am flowing, away from it all.
She almighty strengthens my being
Nourishing my skin and wounds
With her I am alone but never lost.
Regretfully I swim back to the tides
I cherish these last moments alive
In her glorious arms of healing
Till the next plunge, I tuck away
Memories and courage for land.
Renewed, I face tanners and chaos.
But her grains cling to my face and hair
The sand follows me all the way home
Though I am lost, I am not alone.

The ocean heals me. When I swim, I forget the small personal conflicts and gain perspective on the vastness of the Earth. Though many flock to Santa Cruz for its amusement park rides and fair foods, I come only for the ocean. Though I am always sad to leave the waters, the sand from the beach often follows me into my car and into my belongings, just as the perspective the ocean brings me follows me and stays with me. There is too much left unexplored on this Earth for personal worries and conflicts to be of importance. I am just one adventurer amongst many.
