January 11, 2009
Five blocks from where I lived
Is where I live now
Five blocks from the convict
who was arrested again and again
but always managed to get out of
heavy jail time
Five blocks from the woman
whose belly started swelling
so her husband kicked her out
Five blocks from the little girl
who used to run away from school
Five blocks to the nice painter lady
next door with her jasmine arbor
Five blocks to dogs who lick instead of bite
and never howl all night
Five blocks to a bigger house and nicer neighbors
So little distance
So far away

Really good and i love that you kept repeating "five blocks" it makes the poem so deep...i love it!!

There is so much subtle complexity here. You begin with "five blocks from" and end with "five blocks to," where your emotions steer from getting away from a bad place, even if it entailed some good things too. Regardless, your imagery provokes emotion, your diction is wisely selective, and I appreciate the way you appreciate the little things in life, and how this piece came full circle. Nice work

This is beautiful and is personally significant for me. I positively admire your ability to express these ideas (if this does not reflect an actual personal experience of yours, you've certainly fooled me..) so beautifully and honestly, yet with such brevity and clarity.
