"Have some fire. Be unstoppable. Be a force of nature. Be better than anyone here, and don't give a damn what anyone thinks. There are no teams here, no buddies. You're on your own. Be on your own."
- Christina Yang (Sandra Oh)

As a child,
I thought it amusing to slap a Bandaid
on whatever hurt.
O how naive I was,
believing a sterile adhesive strip
could rid me of the future pain I would endure.
How foolish of me to think that a Bandaid
could stop my suffering.

Bandaids hide the problem beneath,
cover them up, but leave a scar behind.

But what do I do for the things a Bandaid cannot cover?
cannot hide?

Now, I put a Bandaid on,
hoping to alleviate my pain,
hoping it will help,
but it doesn’t.
All it does, is remind my of what is broken on my outside,
let alone the damage underneath my skin and within
me.

How funny of me to think that a silly Bandaid
could ever rid the pain I feel
constantly.

Somehow, I thought, once I ripped the Bandaid off,
I’d be healed.

Why do we even have Bandaids?
Is it not better for the world to see our pain?
To maybe find someone with whom we can relate and share our pain with?
To be open and true to what we have done to ourselves, accidentally or not?
Why do we hide beneath
Bandaids.

Bandaids don't just cover wounds, they conceal explanations, they block the "Hows" and "Whys" that really should be asked.
