Harmonious melody dissipates

from the powerful instrument,
a muddy, yet refined sound
echoing off the
cavernous
basement walls.

Fretted neck,
violin-like body,
hollow insides.

Strings get plucked,
pushed and
prodded
causing deep,
harsh
indents
in my fingertips.

Hours a day
wasted
making music
on this piece of wood
and bronze.
All worth it
to see the joy
on my father’s face
when I learn a new
song.

I play for
the enjoyment,
for the excitement of
trying
something new.

My heart swells with
pride
as the tune closes
in on my patiently
waiting
ears.
