You lie eerily, still
No twitching, shifting
or snoring-like you used to-
a shiny grey, metal
eternal; bed
not the bed you belong in

Yet
A closer look
through a teary stare
gives-false-hope
your chest rises, falls
picking up speed
your signature smirk
quivers, and grows
your eyes on the edge
of springing awake
-hazel and small, like mine-

My world is now still-frozen-
except you, lively and grinning
-like a whitetail deer
prancing across a field
in the early morning hush-
all silence, except
the voice, that shoots
a raking scream;
you must still be here.

The final visitation
-the blink ending the stare-
A goodbye-said to be-
a see you, later
a wait
seemingly
unbearable

Leaning in
knees wimpish
I pose a kiss
on your scruffy cheek
one-last-time
a gesture of
daughterly love

My hope
for closure
-disturbed-
coldness
-shockingly cold-
stiffness
emptiness

His soul
is not there,
The Dad shaped hole
in my heart
unable to be filled
with a lifeless body.

My dad recently passed away unexpectedly, this is my personal experience with seeing him at the wake and funeral.
