Breaking Souls

The cold bites into her skin,
gets into the crevices of her body.
Skinny blue veins that trace her pale arms
stand out like the fragments of a shattered ocean.
The first time I saw them,
the loping, climbing scars,
edged raw and red along the insides of her thighs,
something inside me broke.
That's why she hides,
half of her always in a dark shadow.
