It’s an obsession,
more of a curse, really, when
the simplest thought
the tiniest inkling of an idea
will send our mind racing, stumbling, shooting
down your stream of subconscious
‘till this thing called sleep becomes inadequate.
What is a wasted 8 hours counting sheep
when the competition could be working harder?
They wouldn’t dare.
But they have.
In another part of the county she is
doing reps, lifting weights, perfecting poptimes
until she inevitably surpasses you.
Will you let her?
With every day comes the decision
to train harder, run faster, work longer,
until it all pays off.
The excess 5 o’clock swings
just earned you a grandslam.
The countless line jumps
just hosed a girl trying to steal your second base.
It all comes together
in a seamless, elegant display of athleticism
and chiseled talent;
a workhorse so powerful
pitchers cower from your sweet spot,
two point five home to first’s
become complacent with first base
and every athlete nation wide
admires your grind.
