“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can praise them, disagree with them, quote them, disbelieve them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They invent. They imagine. They heal. They explore. They create. They inspire. They push the human race forward. Maybe they have to be crazy. How else can you stare at an empty canvas and see a work of art? Or sit in silence and hear a song that’s never been written? Or gaze at a red planet and see a laboratory on wheels? While some see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”

Enveloped in the white, soft wisps of your dreams,
Buried deep in your subconscious
Lies a figure- a phantom- a ghost
Forgotten, cast off, unseen

He sleeps on your hopes, your aspirations, and your dreams
And yet because of the burden he is-
You choose not to acknowledge him
And continue to live in you ignorant paradise

Who is this figure- this phantom- this ghost
He is change
The change we refuse to make
The change we dismiss without a moments thought

He is the pain of the orphan, the hunger of the poor
He is the heart of the depressed, the ragged breathing of the sick
And yet through the ignorance of our eyes
The thoughtless words in our lies
And the selfish actions of our pride
We see none of this

But will we
The fortunate, the family, the healthy, the wealthy
Will we wake up he
Who sleeps on our suppressed memories
Will we bear the mark of hunger
Will we hold your hands out to the orphan
Will we let the tears of the broken hearted fall onto our cheeks

Or will we
Wait for another- to take on our responsibility
To carry and pass the torch of change
But remember -the change you long for
The change they hunger, pain and cry for
Starts with you
And no one else
If only we take a stand and fight for these brothers of us
Will change occur
We cannot wait for change
Because we are the change
You are the change they long for
But will you get up
Will I get up
Or will we pass it one as a fleeting, but valiant thought
Strong for a moment but forgotten the next

Do not wait for change, Be the change

The author's comments:

I was inspired to write this piece when visiting New York City and seeing the homeless people on the streets. It made me think of the hypocrisy of our actions and whether anyone was truly a good person if they didn't recognize the needs of others. We must take action to incite change for the betterment of society and the world.
