-Beverly Cleary

I use words but they are nothing

Speaking lines from my favorite pantomime

Inhaling seawater tasting of air

Going, going gone to places unseen

To pale skin unfelt by calloused hands

My mind racing at the speed of dark

Some things I say connot be said

Others cannot be heard

"Penny for your thoughts?"

-If the price is right

I know to a great exact

The possible impossible-possibilities

Flooding between black and white

Tideless waters

Lit by the unfailing beams of my failing self

I am a sad excuse for the moon

I deafly hear the wolf cry

Not to answer is a sin

Our fate and our follies in hands unclean

The shadows of the deep

Reaching up, up, up for me

Night will stand alone on the shore

When I am gone

Bathed in the unmarred light of another

I am suddenly lupine

Ashen hair alight with metallic fire

Feet submerged

In sand brought by waves I could not give

The tide at mid-calf beckons him

I yearn to glimpse

The green of the ocean

I have watched over for so long

He turns to cloak himself with himself

And selflessly reaches out his hand
